Numbers - Chapter 3
Numbers is a high-tech heist set on a brutal prison planet. It’s a story of revenge, ex-husbands, and a savant named Numbers who might be the only "key" that actually works.
In the previous chapter : The gang has been assembled, the opportunity arises - there is going to be a break in and break out…how’s it going to go down?
Chapter 3
The next day, back in the line for parts, Khic heard the yell of the Inventory Manager. “Hey Honey, give him your order or get out of line. Do I need to say this every frickin’ day?!”
She was in another world, a world of planning a robbery and a get-away. It’s been years since she had to make these plans. It was invigorating, she was alive again and feeling hopeful. Something that had been missing since she entered this place over a year ago.
She stepped up to the window. “42012331.”
Numbers turned around and mumbled one of his wacked out random word monologues, “the key to happiness on one’s life, is to freeze…” His voice trailed off as he walked off into the back storage room.
“Can you pay attention next time?” The potato head with legs scorned. “I mean, what the hell is wrong with you? Can’t even stand in line and give your order like every other dimwit in this place.”
“I have other things on my mind.”
“Yeah, well think of paying attention.”
“It’s hard to pay attention when you are around,” she flashed the Inventory Manager a look.
“Shut up,” he said, but his eyes lingered.
Numbers returned with a small shiny metal gear.
“Thanks Numbers. Maybe I’ll see you later.” Khic lived by the idea that if she said it out loud, it would happen. Her plan involved Numbers, and she needed to get him on board, if that was even possible.
Numbers just stared at her with his typical blank stare.
“No frickin’ chit chat! Move it,” the inventory manager bellowed.

The fluorescent ceiling light flickered making the hallway appear even dirtier than normal. Khic stopped beside the ladder of the maintenance man who was changing out bulbs, and studied the number on the part she had just picked up. Without moving her lips she said, “will you have access to his ship?”
Len was up the ladder having a hard time fitting a lightbulb into the fixture. Before he responded he glanced up and down the hall making sure it was empty of prying ears. “Yes, the job is to do maintenance on his ship.”
“I’m thinking of that present you gave me.”
“That thought passed my mind too. But it won’t be just an open bar. There will still be security and scanners. It would be a near impossible challenge to bring that key in with us.” He flipped the lightbulb around and tried a different angle.
“We’ll have to go primitive and use brain power.”
He laughed discreetly. “That’s a lot of memorizing, even for you.”
“That’s where Numbers comes in. Bring your cart by my workstation later, I need a delivery made.”
“Whatever you say princess.” With a shove Len fit the bulb into place and instantly the hall brightened.
